Students entering UK classrooms speaking little or no English represent a fast-growing portion of the school-age population.
Students learning to read English are faced with the challenge of learning a new language system including new elements of phonology, vocabulary, and grammar. These students need explicit and intensive instruction in word decoding as they begin to map the sound structures they are learning to English orthography. Lexia provides these learners with an extraordinarily large number of opportunities for explicit and repeated modelling and practice through our specially designed reading software.
Lexia uses extremely effective strategies that support ELL students including setting clear goals, activating prior knowledge, explicitly introducing new concepts and skills, frequent modelling, scaffolding skills in hierarchical levels and providing immediate feedback. “Arden is a two form entry primary school in the inner ring of Birmingham with approximately 98 % of the pupils from ethnic backgrounds. We spent a lot of time looking for a computer program that would meet the needs of pupils across Key Stages 1 & 2. We needed something that would be usable for our many EAL pupils in terms of language, would give good oral support throughout phonetic work and be within the children’s limited ICT skills so that they could use it with some independence. Just over a year ago we discovered Lexia. We were instantly impressed with its phonetic activities and the graphics. As we trialled it we realised what a superb program it was. We take in pupils regularly, across both key stages, with no spoken English, no ICT skills and sometimes no previous school experiences. We found that these children with very little support could go straight on to Lexia Early Reading. As everything is visual with a spoken commentary, the children were able to expand their vocabulary at the same time as they learnt initial and vowel sounds and began to recognise the written letter sounds. As only simple mouse skills were required, most pupils were able to access it independently after just one supported session of 20 minutes.
