Using the LEXIA reading programme as a Wave 3 Intervention
A Project in Leeds Schools in 2006-2007
The programme:
The Lexia Reading Programme is a computerised Independent Learning System which can be used throughout school. It has been used successfully to improve the reading and spelling skills of pupils with a variety of reading difficulties.
It is a reading skills development system which aims to promote rapid progression with reading skills and has the following features:
- There is a diagnostic assessment which places pupils at the appropriate level.
- Pupils can access their own work and carry on from the previous session with limited adult support.
- Pupils work through the programme independently and at their own pace 2 or 3 times a week for between 10 -15 minutes.
- Lexia tracks the progress of pupils and provides individualised branching activities to give practice on aspects which they find difficult.
- Progress is monitored and detailed records can be printed so that records of pupil progress can be maintained.
There is a range of Lexia reading skills and cognitive software programmes:
- The Quick reading Test
- Foundation Reading ages 5 - 8
- Early Reading ages 4 – 6
- Reading Strategies ages 8 - adult
The schools involved:
FFI data was used to identify a family of schools with a high percentage of children funded at FFI Level 1. All schools in the family were invited to participate in the pilot and their interest was matched against a set of criteria. 10 schools were identified as having the capacity, commitment and in-house technical support to participate and deliver the programme.
The training and support:
All participating schools received the software at the beginning of January so that it could be installed onto the school system.
The nominated teacher and TA from the participating schools attended one day’s training in January 2007. The training was delivered by Lexia UK and Education Leeds staff. The aim of the training was to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to deliver the programme.
There were 3 support network meetings during the duration of the project. Technical support was available from Lexia UK and school technical support teams.
Implementation:
- Although the software can be used for all ages the aim of this pilot was to measure the impact of using it as a wave 3 intervention.
- Following the training schools identified 10 pupils in KS2 for piloting the programme. For the purpose of the pilot it was only possible for each school to register and monitor 10 pupils on the system. (It is possible to upgrade the software for whole school access and a number of schools did this)
- Help was offered with setting up pupils on the programme although most schools managed this independently.
- A total of 100 pupils were involved, ranging from Y3 to Y6
- The aim was to deliver an intensive, time limited intervention - 3 sessions a week for 10 weeks
- The pupils were pre and post tested using the Salford reading Test and SWST Spelling Test (Single Word Spelling Test NFER)
Results:
We have the results for 78 pupils after 30 sessions.

Schools were also asked to rate improvement in pupil’s motivation, confidence and understanding in literacy lessons and other lessons. The questionnaire is available here.
