MILLIONS of British children and adults are without one of life’s essential building blocks – literacy. Reading is vital to personal development, whether for enjoying a book, magazine or newspaper or for crucial everyday needs including understanding instructions, credit agreements and timetables.

The magnitude of the problem posed of being unable to read in a growing population means that, in spite of their best efforts, teachers have been unable to make significant lasting progress in addressing the problem.

Today 1.7m adults lack the reading skills of seven year olds, 5.2m have not achieved Key Stage 3 standard and 17.8m cannot read well enough to study for GCSEs.
